About OrgoDraw
OrgoDraw is a free practice site for university students learning organic chemistry. It trains one specific, essential skill: turning a systematic compound name into a correct structure. You read a name, draw the molecule in an interactive editor, and get immediate feedback, with hints and a worked explanation when you need them.
How the content is made
There are currently 50 exercises. Each one, its hints and its explanation were written for this site. Before an exercise is published, its name is checked against its answer structure with two independent sources: the OPSIN name-to-structure program and the PubChem database. Each "common mistake" the site recognises is also checked: the mistaken structure must really differ from the answer, and any compound name used in the feedback must match that structure.
The exercises have been checked with the automated tools described above. They have not yet been reviewed by an independent chemistry educator.
Answers are graded by comparing molecular structures with the open-source RDKit toolkit, entirely in your browser. The grading rules are published in full.
Languages
The site is available in English, Spanish, French and German. Compound names in Spanish, French and German are not translated by hand: they are generated by fixed rules from the checked English names. An exercise whose name the rules cannot translate with certainty is left out of that language, so a language can have slightly fewer exercises than English. The rest of the text was translated from English with the help of an AI model and has not yet been reviewed by native-speaking chemists. Corrections are welcome.
Found a mistake?
Corrections are very welcome. Please use the contact page and include the compound name, what you drew and what the site said.
Who runs the site
