Draw cyclohexanamine

Draw the skeletal structure of cyclohexanamine, then check it. The checker compares the molecule you drew with the answer, so a correct structure is accepted however you draw it.

Draw it in the editor

How this exercise works

  1. Open the exercise in the editor and draw the structure: drag from dot to dot to draw bonds, and tap a bond or an atom to change it.
  2. Press Check answer. Equivalent drawings are accepted, and a mistake such as a missing carbon or a misplaced group is explained.
  3. Stuck? Hints reveal the structure step by step, and the worked answer explains the name.

How to read a name like this

The suffix -amine means a nitrogen with single bonds only, on the carbon its locant gives. N- or N,N- in front of a group puts that group on the nitrogen instead of on a carbon, and amino- is the prefix form of the NH₂ group.

The ending -nitrile means a C≡N group whose carbon is the last carbon of the chain and C1 of the numbering, so the stem counts it. -Carbonitrile is used when the C≡N is attached to a ring; its carbon is then not counted in the ring.

Draw an amine nitrogen with three single bonds and write its hydrogens (NH₂, NH); draw a nitrile as a straight C–C≡N unit with no hydrogen on the nitrogen.

Rules this name uses

  • Cyclo- means that the carbons of the parent form a ring. C1 is the ring carbon with the suffix group if there is one; in a cycloalkene without a suffix, the double bond joins C1 and C2; otherwise C1 carries a substituent. The ring is then numbered in the direction that gives the lowest locants.
