Draw methyl benzoate
Draw the skeletal structure of methyl benzoate, then check it. The checker compares the molecule you drew with the answer, so a correct structure is accepted however you draw it.
How this exercise works
- Open the exercise in the editor and draw the structure: drag from dot to dot to draw bonds, and tap a bond or an atom to change it.
- Press Check answer. Equivalent drawings are accepted, and a mistake such as a missing carbon or a misplaced group is explained.
- Stuck? Hints reveal the structure step by step, and the worked answer explains the name.

How to read a name like this
Benzene is a ring of six carbons with three alternating double bonds. Substituents are prefixes with ring locants from 1 to 6; a single substituent needs no locant. With several, the ring is numbered to give them the lowest locants, and a tie goes to the prefix that comes first in alphabetical order.
Some parent names already include a group on the ring. The carbon that carries that group is C1, and the other substituents are numbered from it. Ortho (o-), meta (m-) and para (p-) describe two groups on neighboring carbons (1,2), with one carbon between them (1,3) or opposite each other (1,4).
Draw the ring as a hexagon with alternating double bonds; both ways of placing them are the same molecule.
Rules this name uses
- An ester name has two words: the first names the group bonded to the single-bonded oxygen, the second the acid part, which ends in -oate and includes the C=O carbon.
