Draw 1-bromobutane

Draw the skeletal structure of 1-bromobutane, then check it. The checker compares the molecule you drew with the answer, so a correct structure is accepted however you draw it.

How this exercise works

  1. Open the exercise in the editor and draw the structure: drag from dot to dot to draw bonds, and tap a bond or an atom to change it.
  2. Press Check answer. Equivalent drawings are accepted, and a mistake such as a missing carbon or a misplaced group is explained.
  3. Stuck? Hints reveal the structure step by step, and the worked answer explains the name.

This exercise has 3 hints and a worked answer.

How to read a name like this

Fluoro-, chloro-, bromo- and iodo- are substituent prefixes in front of the name of the parent alkane. Di-, tri- and tetra- say how many atoms of the same halogen there are, and each of them has its own locant.

Halogens and alkyl groups are numbered together, as equals: the chain is numbered to give all of them the lowest locants, and a tie goes to the prefix that comes first in alphabetical order.

In the drawing every halogen is a single atom at the end of a bond, written with its symbol: F, Cl, Br or I.
